Rabbit Ground

A sample map of the land that would be available to a rabbit hunter for a day or more of hunting.

The proximity of the land in this map is typical of the entire Association. Hunters spend little driving time to the next hunting spot.

Now this is Cottontail Rabbit hunting ground!

This winter picture shows about as much snow as we will have in a season. These tracks are along a grassed in drainage boarding a crop field.

With and without snow.

See the rabbit?

The rabbit in the grass is within a CRP field of tall grass that holds rabbits well.

I had a pretty good rabbit hunt last weekend in [location deleted]...good snow cover and lots of rabbits. I couldn't convince any of my kids to go (very disappointed about that!) so I had to solo it...just me and my son's beagle. The rabbits were pretty jumpy and I had to get used to watching for them way out in front of the dog...further out than I'm used to seeing. I killed several rabbits after good runs and a couple while the dog was running one rabbit but then pushed others nearby...what a hoot! In many instances, I was seeing 3 or 4 rabbits moving around at the same time...some in front of the dogs and others off to the sides...I'm sorry I can't send in any photos...my camera was malfunctioning and memory errors would not allow me to save any photos. I killed a total of 5 with my recurve bow...can't tell you how many I missed though :-) I lost count. Saw and/or got up several covies, one of which was at least 20 birds. Saw a big turkey flock too...around 60 or so birds and a couple of small bucks. Not a bad day in the woods. Thanks again for all the info.

Matt
