Jim on Hunting with MAHA

Pheasant, Bobwhite and Turkey

Hello Jon and John,

Thanks for including the field run and hatch reports in the "Updates" on the website. They start building my enthusiasm to get out in the fields. Here in the KC area in midsummer with lousy hot weather I start getting real interested in following my bird dogs on a cool fall day!

I just sent in my dues for the 12th consecutive year and continue to be very satisfied with the opportunities you provide. This past year I hunted both turkeys and pheasants/quail. The Kansas turkeys outsmarted me, but I did get 2 in Missouri. And, as usual, the dogs and I found pheasants and/or quail on almost all properties visited in both Kansas and Missouri.

I take only a few pictures in the field but wanted to pass along one that shows dad in the foreground on point and his son in the background honoring. Dad has been around longer than I have been a member so he has senior status and will be very part time this season, maybe 1 or 2 fields per hunt. The enthusiasm and nose are there, but his legs just do not work like they used to! Regardless, I know he will try to jump in the truck and want to be along on all hunts.

Thanks to all at MAHA for continuing to providing excellent quality hunting opportunities and hopefully our paths will cross in the field like they did last year in [location deleted] County.

Deer, Upland, Turkey, Waterfowl

Dear Jon, John and Shaun,

I joined MAHA when I moved to the Kansas City area in 1994 and am sending in my Association dues for the 11th consecutive year. This note is to let you know my membership has and continues to be of great value, and I am appreciative (as are my dogs!) of all your efforts to provide quality outdoor opportunities. Over these 11 years the character of the Association has changed, and my compliments on your website which details these changes and is great for up-to-date hunting news. I seldom carry a camera, so no pictures, but I have many memories from enjoyable and interesting hunts over the years.

My total deer hunting experience is 3 hours on opening morning of gun season a few years ago when I shot a nice buck in a fairly open northern [location deleted] farm field. Although I am not out hunting deer, the dogs and I regularly move them bird hunting, and every season we see some trophies. It is easy to observe why members have success on Association lands.

I took up spring turkey hunting a few years ago and hunt both KS and MO. It is a great time of the year to be out in rural areas and I have taken the opportunity to hunt several Association properties in both states. I get to observe up-close the spring–to-summer evolution and have been successful shooting a few turkeys each year.

Your waterfowl properties are 1st class and every year I get out with other members 5 or 6 times and, as all waterfowlers experience, some days are good and some are not so good. The Association facilities offer a variety of opportunities and I would do more; however, it interferes with my favorite hobby, pheasant and quail hunting. My father and son Brittany team prefer to be running in the fields rather than sitting in blinds.

When I moved to KC and joined MAHA, I bought a brittney pup. We have had many terrific days in the field and now both he and I are slowing down, but we have his 3 yr. old son with us who has more than enough energy to make up for both his dad and me!

Sometimes we hunt for only a few hours in the morning but both the dogs and I enjoy the drive into rural areas. Sometimes we get limits, sometimes very few, but whether it is early or late in the season, we almost always see birds. The abundant acreage and variety of habitat in both KS and MO provides ample opportunities to hunt a new property almost every time I go out.

Over the past 10 seasons I have called in for reservations hundreds of times and your office staff has always been professional, courteous and helpful.

These hot summer days cause me to look forward with great enthusiasm to my 11th year of participation in your Association, and I hope there will be many more. My dogs and I appreciate very much the wide variety of hunting opportunities you provide us.

Thanks, Jim M
