Hunt Planning

Most quail hunters hunt as single hunters and many with single dogs. Those that hunt with others or a brace find the Missouri quail habitat and hunting to be well suited for multiple dogs.

The common description is two dog country. Those that want to put more dogs down are after more than just a good day's hunt watching their dogs and we decline their application. In this regard the dumbest statement made to me by a quail hunter making application for membership was he needed to kill lots of birds as he generally runs six pups each year along with his older dogs in preparation for the spring field trial campaign. He wanted to put six to eight dogs on the ground at a time and run behind them on his gator. This applicant's biggest concern was that our 8 quail a day limit was too low as he would get that from the first covey of the day. We declined to continue the conversation with this hunter.

Canary Grass and foxtail mix is not the most desired quail cover habitat and is typically more for finding singles than initial covey points as was the case in this picture.
