Pheasant Habitat 4

Tall grass cover is what holds the most pheasants. In each grass picture there is a dog in the grass somewhere not seen by hunter or camera.

Thick to walk through, easy to see over and quickly learned to develop a sense of what part of the grass field to walk or pass. The picture above is of a dry draw with the surrounding high ground in row crop.

A large contiguous acreage tall grass field of a long slope providing nearly 400 acres of cover. It is cut by dry drainages and shaped into rounded irregular edges by crop fields.

Not all lease land is huntable habitat as it, like most of our better hunting land, is within the agricultural region. The picture below of the 1/2 mile post on a 320 acre farm is such an example of land to drive by. Our land is on both sides of this fence. Had the wet, wind driven snow not blown down the weed corners (pivot irrigation right side) it would have been a hunt spot as it was before the snow and probably will be next season.

Pivot irrigation corners in tall grass (below) provide cover habitat regardless of winter weather. Be prepared to walk as this spot shown below is 1/2 mile in on the short side. A 1/4 mile crop gap then another set of corners. A hunt of such a spot would exceed three hours walking time. That may not seem possible by looking at such pictures, however each corner must be walked and each pivot ranged from a 1/4 (160 acres) to a a one mile square full section (640) acres. Only the quality of the dog power makes the hunt harder or easier.

For those that enjoy being outside, like to walk, have the energy to shoot accurately regardless of the time of day and the pheasant hunting dog power will find plenty of lonely hours in the field free from other hunters.
