Bobwhite Quail Dogs and Their Hunting

Quail Dogs

In MAHA, quail dogs get on quail, coveys and singles. 100% wild quail in a variety of natural habitat of crop field edge, woods and brush filled draws. The hunt is at the hunter’s pace for however long or short his quail dogs may run and for how fast or slow the hunter may walk to enjoy the day and watch good dog work. This tranquility of hunting is enhanced through a reservation system that spreads hunters over the leased land so that dogs do not mix with others and hunter are not stacked up one after another as occurs on preserves and public land. Notice, the term hunters has been used and not hunting parties. No one is required, scheduled or expected to hunt with any other, unless they want to. For those of us that take special pride in our bird dogs we may enjoy that feeling alone with the dog in the field. God truly knew what he was doing when he made dogs!

North Central Kansas Quail Hunting

quail dogsBagging a limit of only quail in north central Kansas is unlikely unless a very concentrated effort is made to avoid pheasants. The only place to avoid roosters would be to hunt the open milo fields. This would reduce the expectations of finding roosters, but not eliminate it.

North central Kansas has some of the best overlapping pheasant and quail habitat in Kansas. This area is often as good on quail as is Missouri.

What better way to show what type of habitat bobwhite occupy than pictures of dogs on point. This page is an additional one to the original bobwhite hunting presentation born from our concern too many bobwhite hunters were bypassing properties due to a perception of insufficient habitat. These picture do show very well how minimal some of the habitat is where quail are found.

No need for a crew of dogs for great bobwhite action.

The reason we limit the number of dogs on the ground at one time is the same why we have a prohibition against gang hunting. We want hunters that enjoy the day a field watching good dog work. This is opposed to those that want to put many dogs on the ground a vacuum the field of birds and cause over pressuring of the game. If we husband our resources properly by having a limited membership and control access through our reservation system then we will always have good hunting.
