Southeast Kansas and Southwest Missouri Quail Habitat
Even seemingly barren land such as this example hold quail. The southern parts of each state are more open with large fields and smaller wooded areas. Tree lines are not as thick and edge area more limited. Association Staff That Hunts
Pictured here is Jon Nee one of our MAHA staffers quail hunting in SE Kansas. He is not hunting a secret hot spot, but rather is hunting a region that once, a few years back, was great quail country. His hunting it now is to evaluate its potential for membership use and land contract retention as recent years have seen a dramatic reduction in coveys in this area. The fact our land managers are out on the land 12 months of the year to include hunting it allows them the wherewithal to make recommendations to others of where to hunt for their hunting interest. Jon also hunts turkey where others have not reserved, bow hunts deer in areas rejected by others and wades our wetlands to find where the ducks are during various weather conditions.
However, do not expect him or the other two land managers to make every one of your hunts. They will get all new hunters started and then after a while cut folks lose as this is a hunt-on-your-own organization. To make it any more than the limited guide service organization than it is would only increase costs without any additional advantage to the membership. And, trust when the office staff recommends a hunting spot during Jon's absence from the office, it is from a list that Jon has left behind of where our hunters should hunt if they should be without a good starting point. The motivation for ensuring all get to hunt the hunt they desire is that our only assurance hunters will want to renew their membership every year is if they do get the hunt they want each time out. |
