Beeper collars are an advantage for hunting our High Bluestem Prairie Grass, Switch Grass, Little Bluestem and overgrown areas. Finding a dog on point can be difficult without one. Flushing dogs may require one if they do not have good check-back qualities. Winter Quail Hunting
Winter snows are not reason to stop hunting. Finding numerous fresh covey tracks in the snow, but not the birds may frustrate some hunters and others will enjoy finding a record of covey movement. Those making a study of quail will take each new snow fall as an opportunity to learn more about this game.
The birds here show that snow cover is not a deterrent to their movement or that of the hunter. Even with snow on the ground these pictures show the weather does not hinder the hunting and it does help by freezing the road surface.
Snow depth rarely makes for difficult hunting. probably one in five winters in Iowa have deep snows. During those years head south to Missouri or Kansas.
