South Kansas and Missouri Habitat

In this part of the country the milo fields are the predominate quail cover and food source.

Quail hunting fields range in size from small to very large. As farmers rotate their crops many years, last year's non-productive bean field may be this year's quail heaven.

For those accustomed to hunting other regions this area may not appear productive. This author has hunted units in this region and averaged 4 coveys for 5 fields hunted and done so after others have gone to the same areas and not found birds.

This is wild bird hunting, not plantation hunting where the hunt is a walk to connect the feeder points.

Parity and Integrity

Parity means the first day hunter has all the rights and privileges as the 20 year hunter to hunt as often as desired, on his choice of habitat, on all land, in all states, for all seasons and all game types.

Quail Hunting

Six quail from one 1/4 section, or 160 acre field, in one hour. Not a great day, but certainly worthy of the hunt. We had laughs and good dog work with plenty of singles action, dog honoring and high speed dog work in a very tight area. The dogs were highly motivated by plenty of fresh scent and covey calls. All the points were intense, leaning, stiff bodied, hard eye and ready for the flush.

It is all about getting on birds. To get the hunters on the birds means the staff must concentrate 80% of their time on the land.
