Hunts
States | All hunters before leaving home will have a plan A and plan B of where to hunt each trip. The first year member we expect to talk to on a more frequent basis getting him/her jump stared on as good of a hunt as possible as an means for securing their renewed membership. Subsequent to their first season the returning hunter reverses the communication and feed back to us evaluations on his hunt quality in any form he wishes to use: email, written letter and pictures are always welcomed of dog, hunter and bird. For the new to Mid-America Hunting Association hunter we will offer choices of where to hunt based on bird of choice be it more pheasant, more quail or a mixed bag hunt. the next decision criteria will be habitat of preference between crop edge, open brush draws, tall grass. The recommendation will be in the form of referring the hunter to a unit map sheet identified by state, county and unit letter. A sample of one is below.
This maps sheet represent just one of the around 200 we maintain on a members only website and it is that website the means by which we distribute maps to the members from initial membership through year round updates. A hunter wanting to hunt this unit would call in his reservation by telephone to the Mid-America Hunting Association secretary the following details, full name, state, county and unit to be hunted and dates. Reservations may be called in up to 30 days before the hunt or as late as the day of the hunt. The limitation is that reservations are only taken by telephone when our secretary is in he office to take reservations Monday through Friday from 9AM to 530PM. the hunter will receive immediate feedback to confirm his reservation. The units are used as a means to separate hunters and for the more sensitive quail units a means by which to limit hunter pressure days. This one example has over 3,000 acres of leases to select from where to hunt and the upland bird hunter can pick and chose which tract to hunt or drive on by.
The red boxes highlight the amount of acreage by size of highlighted property. While this unit has 3,000+ acres it does not man that all 3,000 acres contains 3,000 acres of huntable habitat. Our better upland bird hunting is within the agricultural land use regions where in the central mid-west farming is king and very efficient. Anyone upland bird unit will have a gun limit per day of the maximum number of hunters permitted. This is soft math and not based on a pure ratio of acres per hunter. The number of guns per day will be determined by the quality of the habitat and that amount of acreage. In this case while 3,000 acres may have room for 10 hunters the habitat quality limits it to 6 guns total not six hunting parties. If one lone hunter as one gun is hunting that unit that day he may encounter another group of hunters up to five. that is unlikely as most upland bird hunters chose to hunt with their dogs rather than other hunters, we prohibit gang hunts and any group is li8kly to be family members. The maps we use are state generate maps the same as the local sheriff and county utilities use. Once using the maps to navigate to the lease the hunter will find our unique organizational signs posted to confirm he is at the right place.
The plan A and B aspect would be for the hunter to have more than one county or region of lease map sheets and of our lodging list. The intent is to always have a choice of where to flex to should the weather change and a two hour drive may make a hunt that freezing rain has shortened. For locals this is not an issue. For traveling wing shooters the idea out in this part of the country is where the snow, rain or freeze line may be drawn by mother nature can be crossed by our hunters to make a better hunt with just a little driving effort.
