Pheasant Hunting HabitatPheasant habitat is not limited to the high prairie grass. The fence line, brushy draw, and creek bottom all hold birds giving bird dogs another chance to adapt to a variety of target habitat. And, each cover type will give the do it yourself hunter the variety required to make each time stepping from the truck just a bit better.
As is the case with all habitat the advantages can be readily valued. The disadvantages of fence line hunting include that when quail coveys are encountered invariable the majority of the quail will flush out the other side away from the hunter. If lucky they will flush down the fence line where the singles action will be just fine. The likelihood of finding quail is the same for roosters. However, pheasants typically are more accommodating during the flush preferring to fly out and away from the cover then turn to whatever direction they please allowing more time for a shot. The final discouragement about fence line hunting is that once hunted all there is to do is walk back to the truck. Regardless of any bad news with fence line hunting the good news is they hold not only pheasant, but quail as well allowing for a good days dog work.
